Learning Technology Monthly Update #3

Students in Year 1 have just started using the keyboard for input and are learning about entering simple information such as web addresses and passwords. We will extend this and begin to introduce the students to logging in to certain web resources.

Over the coming two weeks the Y2 students will be logging in to The Beacon using their Google Accounts. This will give them access to a number of resources through The Beacon. We will start exploring some of these tools and resources. Instructions will be coming home so that they can share the things they have been working on.

In Year 3 the students have now been logging in and accessing their Google Accounts and the Beacon using the login information that is in their diaries. This can be shared at home at any time by visiting http://drive.google.com and using the login details in the school diary. The students have looked at all of the core Google Apps suite we will be using this year (Drive, Docs, Slides and Drawings). We will now begin to use these accounts to access some third party tools starting with Blendspace.com as a place to assemble web resources together.

Students in Year 4 have been looking at data, forms and infographics. This will be extended to the students using Google Forms to collect their own Primary data and to analyse return data from a form. We will be using their email accounts and learning about how to use Gmail as part of this.

In Year 5 students have been continuing with Scratch to create the basics of video game mechanics for a simple game. They have used these visual coding tools and learned the terms: Program, Script, Sprite, Loop, Control, Operator, Axis and Direction. We will finish these video game projects and then move on to work related to email and organisation of contacts and information.

Students in Year 6 will be building websites using Weebly.com. They have all had premium accounts created so they can create multiple sites. They will create an example site to learn the tool and then produce a website related to their Unit of Inquiry around civilisations.

All students will be receiving details for accessing Code.org Studio over the coming few weeks. This is a fantastic resource to teach students about coding, computational thinking and as an application of maths. Students will use this as part of their lessons but also as a resource they can access outside of school if they wish.
