Learning Technology Monthly Update #8

Students in Year 1 are working on programming their own short animated scene using Scratch Jr on the iPad. They are using block coding and loops to make the events repeat and programming several different characters in the scene. Student’s will be sharing their learning in Scratch Jr on the Y1 Sharing Day.

In Year 2 students will be learning to expand further their use of Google Apps. We will explore communication within Gmail and Hangouts and also look at cybersafety issues around the use of communication tools online.

Students in Year 3 have been exploring design tools. They have learned to edit and manipulate photos using Pixlr Editor’s tools. They focused on layered painting and using some of the more advanced tools. We will be continuing with the theme of design as the students learn the beginnings of 3D design using TinkerCAD.

Students in Year 4 have just begun a project to independently create their own games in Scratch. Students are using a variety of online materials to support their independent learning and following a checklist of game design principles. They will share their games with others when completed.

Working within their current Energy unit of inquiry, the students in Year 5 are mid-project designing, 3D printing and constructing their own electric wind powered cars. Students first create a rough 3D design, then a detailed ‘kit’ for 3D printing. Once printed they will add the electronics components and race their completed cars in the school hall.

In Year 6 the focus is very much on supporting with any technology tools that they are using within their PYP Exhibition. There are some really exciting projects involving technology from the students that they are working very hard on at the moment.

Below are some photos of students designing, making and building VR environments this last week.
