IMG_9110Dear Parents,

Another busy week has flown by! Our sports teams continue to be involved in matches and tournaments with more success. You can read more about their achievements further on in the Newsletter.

We had a very good attendance for our Maths Information Evening Workshops last Tuesday. I hope the sessions were useful and enjoyable. The presentations are available on our website.

We have the exciting news that ESF is organising a 3-day visit to Foshan City, China at the end of this month, as a cultural and educational experience. This opportunity is open to Y6 – Y9 students only and there are very limited spaces. Please contact me if you would like your Year 6 child to be considered for registration.

Thank you to the students and adults, led by Ms Dewhurst, with wonderful support from Ms. Sanghvi, Mrs Chainani and Ms Tsui, who shared an assembly this morning with a focus on Diwali. Having everyone in school dressed in bright colours certainly made us all feel happy today! This is an important festival and time for many of our families and it is always good to share with our school community so that we learn more about different cultures. Thank you to our parents who came to watch the assembly and also took part via home videos! I would like to wish all of our families who celebrate this festival next week a ‘Happy Diwali’.

We have our camps coming up – Years 4, 5 and 6 will all be out next week. Year 3s will be out in a couple of weeks time. I am looking forward to visiting all of the children at these camps which provide rich opportunities to develop independence and deepen friendships. Let’s hope we have good weather.

Class Assembly

Class assembly date changes – 1H Class assembly will now be on February 26th and 5Y Class Assembly will be on April 29th.

Uniform

We have clear expectations regarding our school uniform. Sometimes students may need to wear something different for a short period of time if they have outgrown a pair of shoes for example, but we encourage everyone to adhere to the uniform at all times – I have noticed recently a handful of children wearing PE shoes (trainers) that are definitely not white! As the weather begins to cool down, please try to ensure you have the appropriate winter uniform ready so that we don’t see children wearing cardigans and jackets that are not the BHS Uniform. Also on this theme, when we have non-uniform days, please ensure your child does not wear ‘heely’ shoes to school (ones with a wheel in the heel), or trainers with any kind of studs that are meant for wearing on a football pitch as they could cause an accident. We appreciate your support in helping to ensure we maintain our strong identity and that all the children feel a sense of pride in wearing the BHS colours.

Community choir

Thank you to those who have already signed up! Some of you may have seen the British TV programmes based around the formation of choirs, such as ‘Military Wives’ and this has inspired Mr Gibson and myself to set up a BHS Community Choir. This would be open to all parents of BHS students and to BHS Staff. The choir will begin in January, rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7pm. We would hope to perform at school around Easter. There won’t be auditions – just enthusiasm is required! If you are interested, please sign up at the following: http://goo.gl/forms/fHNKBF35kU

Go on – don’t be shy!

Car Parking and After School Clubs

As you will know the car park is for staff only. If you are collecting your child from an after-school club, please ensure you and the children walk carefully through the car park when leaving as often there are cars leaving at the same time. Please do not park close to the car park entrance or turn around in the entrance as this has the potential to cause obstructions and visibility issues. Safety is our paramount concern. We appreciate your cooperation with this.

LEAP Request for Actors

The LEAP Organisation, who our children visit is looking for boys and girls from the ages of 8-14 with a good command of the English language to take part in a series of educational videos for LEAP. They produce educational videos on topics ranging from biology, natural science and moral education. Maths

Just to say thank you for supporting World Maths Day. The children across the school thoroughly enjoyed earning points as they played games against each other. The points they gained were translated into donations to UNICEF from Mathletics. We also raised $2718.90 for UNICEF to purchase a school-in-a-box and have received a letter from the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF expressing their heartfelt thanks. Furthermore, we have two Mathletics champions at BHS! Well done to everyone for partaking and the following children received recognition at this weeks Golden Book Assembly; Ryan Zhang in Year 5 and Kwan Ho Yuen in Year 3. They both came within the top one hundred places in the world for their year level.

Following on from this, I would like to thank all those parents who were able to attend our Parent Information Evening on Tuesday. The staff involved very much enjoyed sharing our approach to Maths with you and participating with you in different activities that your children have worked on. Some excellent questions and suggestions were put forward and they will be answered and shared with you.

 Football

Boy’s Football
Friday 30th October – DBIS Tournament

The ‘A’ team went through their group stage unbeaten and played some fantastic football. They started with a hard fought draw against Discovery Bay and followed it up with a 3 nil over Shatin with goals coming from Jotaro, Mikail and Jake. The third game was another great game in which we dominated the normally strong, Discovery College, and won 2 nil with goals from Jake and an own goal. This meant we had either qualified for the cup or plate. We knew a draw or better would put us into the higher competition. We went down early against Kellett but once again worked hard and eqalised through Praise to secure a cup semi final. This was a great result for Beacon Hill. In the semis we came up against a very strong ICHK Hong Lok Yuen and were not able to match them. Well done to all the players and a big thank you to the parents and friends who came down to support.

The ‘B’ team also played four games and were in a very strong group. The team started with a great 2 nil win against Kellett with goals from Jordan and Anakin. The next game was against a strong CIS and despite playing well we lost 4 nil. Our third game was our best game as we held Kennedy to a nil all draw. This meant we had to win our last game 3 nil to qualify for a semi final. The team tried really hard hitting the post a couple of times and having a ball being saved on the line. In the end DBIS managed to score one goal. Well done to the players and thanks to the parents and friends who came along to watch and thanks to Mr Pheasant for helping coach the team.

Another successful week in the Kowloon Football League. The quality of football by both teams was very high. The highlight was a goalline clearance by Henry! Thanks to Anakin and Daniel who were once again outstanding captains and thanks to all the supporters who came to watch.

Girl’s Football
Saturday 31st October

The girls team travelled to Peak School to play in a mini tournament against other ESF schools. Our first game was against Clear Water Bay and in a very close battle BHS won 2-1 with goals from Natalee and Alyssa. In the second game the team played some lovely passing football and won 3 nil against Quarry Bay 2 with goals from Alyssa, Mia and Aayesha. The third game would determine who would be champions and once again BHS played excellent football and won 2 nil with goals from Mia and Aayesha. In the fourth game against Quarry Bay 1 it was a close game, however Alyssa scored and we managed to win our 4th game and go through the mini tournament unbeaten. Well done to all the players for another great tournament. An amazing record for the Beacon Hill girls team – they have played 15 games and only lost once and had 3 goals scored against them. Thanks to Miss Mai for coaching the team and thanks to the parents and friends who came to support the team.
