Dear Parents, Family and Friends,

The term continues apace with lots of great learning occurring. This week I accompanied 4L on their ‘pond dipping’ excursion which was wonderful. The weather was perfect and the children all challenged themselves in one way or another. If you have the opportunity to go to the country parks with your children at the weekend or during holidays I encourage you to do so as it is a wonderful opportunity to explore nature together and learn about why it is important to protect it. We are aiming to plan opportunities for all our students throughout the course of a year to have these experiences as it seems that in our busy lives many children are not having these chances and therefore are growing up with little understanding and experience of the natural world and consequently are not respectful of it and in some cases, even a little scared to be in these environments.

Last weekend was a great time for BHS sports. Our girls football team participated in a friendly tournament held at Peak School and were the tournament winners. Our netball team also won their match in the Junior Netball League. Well done to all those who represented the school and thank you to the teachers who spend a lot of their own time coaching, training and attending the tournaments.

4F shared their class assembly with their parents and the school this morning. It was a fabulous assembly where they shared some of their learning from their unit about habitats. There were some important messages about reducing, reusing and recycling and how we need to make decisions that will help protect our world. Well done to 4F and thank you to all the adults who helped.

Today 25 of our students went with Mr Gibson to take part in the annual ESF Orchestra Day which was held at RCHK. I managed to get there in time to watch their performance showcasing their hard work prior to the day which had been pulled together in rehearsals this morning. I was very proud of their performance and the way they worked together. Thanks to all involved in this day.

On Monday the new House Captains were announced to the school. Congratulations to:

hc

Over the coming weeks the Year 6 team and myself will be working with these Captains to plan ways in which they can develop the roles and activities for their Houses.

Also on Monday the first House Team Points winner was announced. It was a close week in terms of points. Here are the results:

Well done to all of the students for their effort and enthusiasm.

International Food Fair – We Need Your Support

Our hard-working PTA is currently asking for prize donations for our International Food Fair Prize Draw. If you or any of your contacts are able to provide a prize, please contact Janley, our PTA Coordinator – pta@bhs.edu.hk Thank you in advance!

Dropping Off Children in the Morning

If your child is brought to school by private car please make sure you drop them off quickly and then move on. We sometimes have drivers who drop off and wait, or even get out of the car and go into school. This blocks the front of school for our school buses who need to off-load many children. This week some of the buses have not been able to stop outside the school which means the children, including Year 1s are having to walk on the pavement by the busy road unaccompanied. Also, please do not stop in the entrance to the school car park as this can cause the road to be blocked in both directions. We want to make the busy morning time as safe as possible for everyone. Thanks for your support.

Introduction to the PYP on Tuesday 29th November

As I am sure you are aware Education is constantly developing and schools are a very different place to when you went to school.  With this in mind the Introduction to the PYP Workshop is designed to give you everything you need to know about the PYP.  It is ideal for new parents to our school and parents who have not attended a similar workshop. I will make it as interactive as possible and you will leave with a good foundation of our approach to learning at Beacon Hill School.  We will run this workshop twice on Tuesday 29th November at 9:00 am to 10:00 am and repeat at 6:30 to 7:30 pm on .Click here to register.

Reading Workshop

Dear Parents,

The English Team will be hosting two Reading Workshops on Wednesday 9th November.
2.00pm – Reading Workshop for Helpers (Hall)
6.30pm – Reading Workshop for Parents (Hall)

The aim of the workshops is to support parents/helpers with Home Reading with your child(ren).

We will be going over some comprehension strategies and offering suggestions to make the time you spend reading at home with your child(ren) as beneficial as possible.

In the interests of being environmentally-friendly, we are contacting you via email and have attached a short questionnaire for those of you who will be attending. We would ask that you do complete the form by Friday 4th November, to allow us to prepare the necessary resources and tailor the workshops to your feedback.

This workshop may be best suited to parents of students who are new to BHS (in Year 1 or other year groups), however, all parents are welcome to attend as long as they complete the digital reply slip/questionnaire: https://goo.gl/forms/tCOExvSBubJkDCSy2

We look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday 9th November.

Kind regards,

The English Team

Girls Football Tournament

On Saturday the girls football team participated in the Peak School tournament. After the last tournament the emphasis was on scoring goals and the girls certainly did, scoring 12 goals in three games. Equally as impressive was their great defense in not conceding any. Our first game was against the Peak School and we won 4-0 with a hat-trick from Alyssa and Tammy scoring a goal from a kick in. Our second game was against Quarry Bay B and we won 5-0 with goals from Alyssa (2), Natalee (2) and Mia. This meant we had made the final against Quarry Bay A and in the final our defense was outstanding with all the girls making very strong tackles. The final score was 3-0 with goals from Natalee, Katie and Mia. The whole team had played excellent football the whole morning. Sophia was chosen as player of the tournament for doing a fantastic job up front. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who came to watch.

Girls Football

On Tuesday the girls football club traveled to RCHK to play some friendly matches against RCHK. We took two teams – one experienced team and one team with beginners. Both teams played well with the experienced team winning all three games with every player scoring at least one goal. The beginner’s team results were one win, one draw and one loss. Cameron and Kaeli were outstanding in defense for the beginners team. Well done to all players! Photos can be found HERE.

Boys Football

Yesterday the boys football team played some friendly matches against Kowloon Junior School at King’s Park. Mr Thompson and I took three teams. It wasn’t about the results but a chance for our footballers to learn and experience matches against other schools. Highlights were a hat-trick to Ibrahim, Tyler making a great save when in goal, Isaac’s amazing dribbling and Kaden’s continuous running. We were amazed by how many supporters we had so thanks to all the friends and family who came to cheer us on. Photos can be found HERE.

ESF Parent Representative

You should have received the ballot papers for voting parent representatives to the ESF Board. Our own BHS School Council Parent Representative, Shareen Hellen, is a candidate. She has been very involved with the BHS PTA over the years and would be very grateful for support from the BHS community. Place the ballot paper into the envelope provided (one envelope for one ballot paper) and return to ESF Centre by post or by hand by 12 noon on Friday 18 November 2016. Do NOT return the ballot paper to BHS.

International Food Fair

We have thus far received half the amount of the Grand Raffle Prize donations towards our International Food Fair (“IFF”) Lucky Draw which will take place Friday March 24 2017 from our BHS Community support. In the past we’ve received over HKD$60,000 worth of prizes or donations, offering wonderful anticipation and sales for our IFF Grand Raffle Tickets which is governed by the HK Home Affairs Office under an approved HK Lottery License. Our BHS Community has benefited directly from these proceeds with a new playground, ICT equipment, new library, new ICT room and new playground equipment, overall improved environment for teaching and learning. All IFF Grand Raffle Ticket Sales proceeds are donated directly to BHS and this coming 2017 IFF Grand Raffle Ticket Sales proceeds will be pledged towards school grounds anniversary enhancement in conjunction with our Beacon Hill School 50th Anniversary! Appreciate your donations and support to BHS PTA and BHS and our thriving children.

Our house is buzzing with camp excitement and I hope you can enjoy the same anticipation with your children.

Health

We would like to inform you of the fact that one child had head lice. The child completed the treatment at home and returned to school.

The eggs of the head lice are usually found near the root of the hair and there is the sensation of an itchy scalp. Nits are tiny and whitish, yellowish or brownish in colour.

How do you catch it?

Via direct head to head contact with the infested person.

The lice crawls.

If you suspect that the child has head lice, please have it treated by using medicated lotion or shampoo prescribed by the doctor to destroy the head lice. The use of a fine-toothed comb may help to remove the nits and please throw away the eggs properly.

Please check your child’s hair regularly for head lice.

Please check your eyebrows or beard, if you have one.

Anyone may catch it.

Always Keep Hands Clean.

Ms Chen
