Dear Parents, Family and Friends,

Important Dates

18nov

Well done to all our performers who were at the Arts in the Park festival last weekend. The mass choir sounded great and were a credit to the ESF schools that participated. This week has continued with success, with our girls’ football team winning the DC Years 5 and 6 Girls Football Tournament. We are getting used to them winning this year, which is wonderful, but I am especially pleased with the way the team work together and support the other teams.

Yesterday our netball team took part in the Kowloon Schools Netball Tournament. Well done to them and thank you to Ms Andrews and Ms Younie for coaching.

Today our Year 5 children shared their learning with their parents. The focus of the Unit of Inquiry was ‘Migration can have an impact on people and society’ – this is an issue that is highly relevant today across the world. I hope the those parents who were able to attend enjoyed watching and listening to their children and learnt more about what they have been doing in school. Photos can be found HERE.

Our Year 4 children have been on camp on Cheung Chau this week. They had a great time playing on the beach and exploring the island. A very big thank you to the teachers and educational assistants who gave up their time to ensure the children had a camp to remember.

Well done to all the students for their eagerness to win House Points last week. Once again it was a very close result:

I met with the House Captains this week. They had been working on ideas to make their respective Houses the best that they can be. They shared many wonderful and creative ideas and we have decided on the first three action points, which they will share with the school in Monday’s Golden Book Assembly.

International Food Fair – We Need Your Support

Our fabulous PTA is currently asking for prize donations for our International Food Fair Prize Draw. If you or any of your contacts are able to provide a prize, please contact Janley, our PTA Coordinator – pta@bhs.edu.hk Thank you in advance!

BHS SLT Awards

Here are the recipients of last week’s SLT award:

Kaylee Fish 3A – For her positive attitude and active participation at camp despite having one arm in plaster.

Best wishes,

ndnn

 News from the English Team

How can I help my child with reading at home?

Last Wednesday, the English team welcomed both helpers and parents to school to talk about how they can help their child at home with reading. The workshop was a chance for the teachers to show how we explicitly teach comprehension at school by modelling three mini lessons. Thank you to everyone who came and joined in so readily with the tasks.

The three strategies we focused on were:

Inference: Great readers use their background knowledge and clues in the text to make predictions and reach conclusions.

Making connections:  Great readers make connections between the text, themselves, other texts and the world.

Determining Importance:  Great readers read with a purpose. They have a question in their mind so that they know what is important in what they read.

It is essential that home reading time is a conversation with your child which gives them a chance to develop their understanding. Try explaining how you have understood what you are reading to your child.  There are some more tips for home reading available on the school website; https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/helping-your-child-with-reading/

If you have any questions about how to help your child develop their comprehension skills, do not hesitate to get in touch: jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk

Camp for Year 5

In the next week our Year 5 children will be going on their camp. The camp is an exciting way of experiencing new areas of Hong Kong for many of our children and broadening their experiences. Parents are encouraged to keep up-to-date with what is going on on each camp by clicking on the links on the front page of our website or through our mobile app by clicking on the ‘Camp Live’ icon on the bottom of the screen. We will be posting photographs of the children throughout camp.

Kowloon Netball Tournament

On Thursday 17th November a group of 10 Year 5 and 6 girls participated in the Kowloon Netball Tournament at KJS. It was a great opportunity to play different schools and put our netball skills to practice. Unfortunately we were defeated in the first round, however in the second round we found our defence and team work skills and managed to come second in the competition for the shield with a win against DBIS B team. Well done to Carrie for fantastic shooting and a big well done to everyone who played. Thank you to all parents who came along to support, for all the hard work put in by staff and students at KJS and we look forward to our next match next week!

Girls Football

Well done to the girls football team who won the Discovery College football tournament on Wednesday.  This was the second tournament win this year and the third time they have made the cup final. Over two years this team has performed amazingly. They made the final of seven tournaments over two years winning 4 cups, one bowl and two runner ups. This year they have played 16 games and only lost once on penalties and only had two goals scored against them.

Our first match was against ICHK and we produced a strong attacking performance in a five nil win with goals from Natalee (2), Mia, Rei and Katie. Our next game we played on the smaller pitch against AISHK and it was a lot harder to score goals and we managed to win one nil with Sophia causing the AISHK to team to score an own goal to help us win. Our third game was once again on the small pitch and in a close game we managed to draw nil all with HKIS b nil all. Our semi was a close game with both teams having chances. Thanks to a great goal from Natalee, strong defence from Tammy and Kirsty and Alyssa making outstanding saves on goal we managed to hold on to win.

Our final was against a very strong HKIS A and we took the lead early on with a great goal from Mia. HKIS continued to attack and managed to score a goal to tie the game. Alyssa made an amazing save late in the game to keep us in it. At the end of regular time it was 1 all and it was down to penalties. All our penalties were superbly taken and with Alyssa again making great saves we won the shootout 4-2.

Thanks to all the parents who came and supported us. Alyssa was named Beacon Hill’s player of tournament for her confident goal keeping and greats in the semi final, final and penalty shoot out.

Mr Teahan

Calling all gymnasts!

If you are a gymnast and know that you will be competing in next year’s HKSSF competition can you pleas email me as soon as possible so that the school can enter a team in next year’s competition. In previous years we have had individual competitors and this year we would like to also enter the teams competition. I would also need a volunteer parent to be the liaison between the school and the organisers.

Thanks,

Mr Teahan
