Dear Parents, Family and Friends,

Sports Day for Year 3 to 6 was a wonderful day yesterday. The weather was fabulous and the children had a fun morning along with opportunities to compete in competitive ways. This year the points the children scored are being totalled and will be used to determine the winning Houses for each year group and the overall Sports Day House winner. We look forward to announcing the results soon. Special thanks to Mr Teahan for the excellent organisation, to all our teachers and EAs for running the activities and supervising the children and to the site staff for all their work pre and post event. Photos can be found HERE.

Here are some of the upcoming events to note:

IMPORTANT DATES

Sports

In addition to the sports day yesterday, today we have had children competing in the DBIS Touch Rugby Tournament at King’s Park. I managed to get to see a couple of games and both our boys and girls teams were doing a great job. Well done to them and to Mr Teahan and Mrs Wu for coaching them. STOP PRESS!!—-the teams have just returned to school and updated me – the boys made it all the way through to the cup semifinal but unluckily lost to Australian International School. Andreas was named best improved player. The girls managed to beat CIS and are the Plate winners! Congratulations to both teams for representing BHS so well and for playing such a fast-paced game on quite a warm day.

Tomorrow is the ESF 50th Anniversary Sports Gala taking place at KGV. The morning kicks off with cross-country running at 9.15am and is followed by football and netball. I hope to see some of you there.

International Food Fair

The raffle tickets are selling well but there is still time to sell even more. All proceeds are put back into improving Beacon Hill School, so please do what you can to help.

Learning and Teaching at BHS

Earlier this academic year the staff spent time discussing and examining what we  believe excellent learning and teaching means for us at Beacon Hill School. We have finally come to an agreement of the ‘Beacon Hill School Shared Philosophy of Learning and Teaching’- please find a copy of this here. This underpins our entire approach and guides our decision-making. One example of where this can apply is in a review of our Homework policy (we now use the term Home Learning) which we have recently begun. Later this term I will be asking parents for views and opinions about home learning – pros and cons with a view to us publishing an agreed, revised Home Learning policy which will come into effect from August 2017. In the mean time, here’s just one article which you may find interesting – https://www.edutopia.org/blog/research-trends-is-homework-effective-youki-terada

Best wishes,

ndnn

News from the English team

We need your help!

We are looking for volunteers to spend a little time each week reading with children in school. The aim of this would be to develop the children’s reading fluency and it would be a very relaxed, fun time for you and the children. Reading fluency is about reading aloud in a way which is expressive and interesting to listen to, it is often an indication of understanding of a text. Our group of volunteers would be coordinated by an ex-BHS teacher and the session from 8.45 to 10.30am on a Wednesday morning would be used to read with individual children from different year groups.

If you are able to help the children by reading with them in school time please get in touch with me, Emily Jeves, at jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk. If the Wednesday time does not work for you do contact me and we can arrange something else.

Writing competition

The Royal Commonwealth Society is running a competition for children who live in countries that are in the UK commonwealth or were. The details can be found at https://thercs.org/youth-and-education/the-queens-commonwealth-essay-competition/  and the category titles for younger children look really interesting.

Storytelling at BHS

If you have a love of children’s stories and enjoy reading stories to children we would like to hear from you. We would like to create an opportunity for our students to listen to stories read by keen parents in their mother tongue. If this interests you and you have the time between 12:45 and 1:30 during a weekday please sign up via this Google Form. Once we have collected the interested parents I will arrange a brief meeting at school to explain in greater detail.
