Year 4 Sharing Day
This is an opportunity for the children to share their learning from our first unit of inquiry with you all. We kindly request that every child has at least one parent in attendance.
The event will take place on Friday 22nd of September and will begin at 9:00am in the school hall. More information to follow.

House Colours Assembly – Friday 1st September

As I mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, we are aiming to develop the BHS House system this year. The first part of this involves Year 6 students who have a desire to be their House Team Captains presenting to the school in next Friday’s assembly. To make this a special event and to begin to develop a sense of belonging to the four houses, we would like all students to come dressed in their house colour next Friday 1st September. Any T-shirt, shirt etc of their house colour will be suitable – plain coloured shirts preferable, and not football shirts or similar.

James Harrison
This week, the students had the chance to spend time with Ms. Cassie, Ms Fisher, Ms Wu and Mrs Fennelly to find out about something that they really value. This allowed the children to access a wide range of information from a wide range of perspectives. Please find some snap shots below to give you a flavour of their experiences…
Miss Cassie – African culture
Ms. Wu – Mindfulness
Ms. Fisher – Yoga
Mrs Fennelly – Brush lettering
Drama
Our drama sessions with Ms. Heather continued (apart from 4W who missed their session due to Typhoon Hato, but they’ll be having an additional catch-up session next week). This week we focused on improvisation techniques, team building and began to come up with some shared beliefs as part of a small group.

Who We Are: Our beliefs and values can influence our attitudes and behaviour

Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:

  •  Our beliefs (FORM)
  •  Where our values come from (CONNECTION)
  •  Differing behaviours and attitudes (PERSPECTIVE)

Next week the children will be working in groups to explore (through drama and technology) a belief that they all share.

They will also have the opportunity to start thinking more deeply about where their beliefs and values come from and why they are so important to them.

Place Value

Central Idea

The base 10 place value system can be extended to represent size.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

The patterns of 5 digit numbers and how they are represented

Representing number patterns using words, symbols, numbers and tables

Next week the children will be participating in further games and problem solving activities to revise and extend their knowledge of place value. We also be taking a look at rounding 4 and 5 digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Purpose: Writing to entertain
Next week the children will continue to read and enjoy a range of poetry and will begin focusing particularly on Kennings poems. The children will be writing their own poems, too.
Comprehension Strategy
Visualising: Readers create pictures in their heads.
Self Monitoring: Readers know it is their job to make sense of texts.

Congratulations to this week’s Golden Book certificate winners!

No home learning task will be assigned this week.
Spelling and reading home learning tasks will be set from Monday 28th August onwards.

However, Miss Heather has asked the children to think about the following question in preparation for next week’s drama sessions:

What’s the difference between a belief and a value?

Mandarin (Ms Lynn #1) – Please check your Google Classroom for next week’s homework.
