Year 4 Sharing Day
This is an opportunity for the children to share their learning from our first unit of inquiry with you all. We kindly request that every child has at least one parent in attendance.
The event will take place on Friday 22nd of September and will begin at 9:00am in the school hall.
This week in Year 4 the children have begun making connections between their beliefs and values and their attitudes and behaviour. As the unit progresses, they are developing their ability to articulate what is important to them and how this affects what they do. They are also developing their ability to see things from another’s perspective.
Drama
The children have been able to take their unit of inquiry learning and apply it to their drama sessions by considering how to show different beliefs and values.
Planning and Creating a Video
Year 4 children have begun to consider how they can share their beliefs and values through the medium of video. They have collaborated within a group to generate ideas. Miss Kannis has been supporting this process.
Music
The children have been working in groups with Mr Gibson, exploring how values and beliefs can affect our attitude towards music.

Who We Are: Our beliefs and values can influence our attitudes and behaviour

Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:

  •  Our beliefs (FORM)
  •  Where our values come from (CONNECTION)
  •  Differing behaviours and attitudes (PERSPECTIVE)

Next week the children will be using drama to develop their understanding of theirs and others’ beliefs and values. They will be constructing freeze frames to show different values and beliefs. They will also explore how our behaviour and attitudes can reveal what is important to us.

Place Value

Central Idea

The base 10 place value system can be extended to represent size.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

  • The patterns of 5 digit numbers and how they are represented
  • Representing number patterns using words, symbols, numbers and tables

Next week the children will be delving further into regrouping, renaming and rounding large numbers. We have also found that for some children, recognising and reading 5 digit numbers can be a challenge, so this would be a good thing to practise at home!

Purpose: Writing to entertain
Next week the children will have more opportunities to fine tune their kenning skills and will be exposed to other types of poetry, such as haikus.
Comprehension Strategy
Visualising: Readers create pictures in their heads.
Self Monitoring: Readers know it is their job to make sense of texts.
Next week the children will continue to consider the skills they employ when making sense of a text independently and will begin thinking about strategies they can use when they get stuck.

Congratulations to this week’s Golden Book certificate winners!

Spelling
The children have a list of words they need to learn. They should practise these at home in preparation for “buddy spelling tests” (the children testing each other) in class next week.
Reading
The children have been given their Home Reading Journals and are expected to read for 20 minutes per day at their given comprehension age. Children will record the title of their book in their journal. Please discuss your child’s reading and leave a comment in the journal so that they can change their book.
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
  • Home reading should be fun not a chore.
  • Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
  • There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.

Mathematics

All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and / or practising their times tables.

Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
