Meet the Teacher Evening

Thanks so much to all that attended our meet the teacher evening this week. Slides will be available from the evening on our website.

Central Idea – Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas.

An inquiry into…
  • the tools and techniques artists use (form)
  • how messages are interpreted and conveyed (perspective)
  • how can I improve my work (responsibility)
Concepts : form, perspective, responsibility
Related Concepts : style, influence, expression, choice (techniques)
Learner Profile : reflective, communicator
Attitudes : appreciation, creativity
This week we have been investigating some different methods that artists use to convey messages. We learned about the seven elements of art and how they can be used to convey different emotions. We also learned about how different mediums such as watercolours or oil pastels can be used for different effects. It was lots of fun!
Number Maths – Place Value
Central Idea –
An inquiry into…
  • patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths
  • the patterns of 6+ digit numbers and how they are represented
In number maths we started to refresh our partitioning skills. We used different concrete resources to visualise the numbers to give them more meaning. We also learned about representing them with different symbols and discussed what other items you could use. Why not try representing the numbers at home?
Strand Maths – Shape and Space
Central Idea –

An inquiry into…
  • creating, describing and visualising 2D and 3D shapes
  • transforming shapes
  • locating points on a grid

In strand maths, we have been looking more closely at triangles and the different angles you can see in them. We talked about acute, obtuse and reflex angles to develop our mathematical language.

Writing Focus – We have been working on the grammar units in sentences and how we can change them to make our sentences better. So far, we have focused on the subject, verbs, nouns, adjectives and sentence type using our narratives from our book stacks. It was lots of fun chopping up sentences and moving them around!
Reading Focus – Self-Monitoring and Visualising
For the duration of this UOI, our Reading comprehension strategies will be Visualising and Self-Monitoring.  We will introduce these strategies to the children in the upcoming weeks and the demonstrate way they can use them to help them better understand what they are reading.  It would be fantastic if you could chat with your child about these and encourage them to use these whilst reading at home.
This week we began to choose our book stacks and worked on visualising some class texts. As time goes on we hope to all the children to choose more and more what texts they use in class.
Well done to this week’s lucky Golden Book Certificate achievers….
