How We Organise Ourselves

Central Idea: Within a community that are different roles and responsibilities

This week the children have been continuing to find out about people who work in our school and the roles and responsibilities that they have. In groups, they discussed what they already know about chosen people in our school and what they would like to find out now. From this the children formed questions that they will be asking to different members of our school community.

Next week we will be starting to write letters to members of our school community inviting them to come to have lunch with us. This will also be an opportunity for the children to interview people about their role in the school. The children will also be thinking about and discussing the types of communities that they belong to such as, family, school, out of school clubs etc.

How the World Works

Central Idea:  The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things

Next week the children in Year 1 will be starting to inquire into day and night by listening to stories, reading non-fiction books and other hands on activities.

In Maths this week the children have enjoyed learning about time. They had a great time using the sand timers and stop watches to explore what they could do in a minute. Some of the activities they timed themselves doing included, building a tower, counting to 100, writing their name and seeing how many star jumps they could do in a minute. The children have also had experience at telling the time to the hour using the class mini clocks.
Central Idea:
Numbers can be used in many ways for different purposes in the real world.
Next week we will start a two week unit based on the number system and place value. We will begin this unit by exploring the idea of estimation and counting accurately. The children will also be exploring the concept of 1 more and 1 less.20161027_091820            20161027_091903

In English this week we have started our unit based on Writing to Socialise. The children have received letters from different imaginary story characters and have started to learn about the simple features of a letter. We have been really pleased that the children have been keen to have a go at their own letter writing and have loved using the Post Office in our Shared Area.

Next week we will continue with this focus by writing letters to people in our school community.

Phonics

The phonemes for this unit are:

 r  l  d  b  f  h  i  u

Camera Words:  day, of, a, he, today, for

At school, as part of our language rotations all the children read to an adult at least once a week, usually twice.
