Year 1 Update – Wk 20

Tuesday 2nd  February – Dim Sum Lunch with parents & CNY Flower Market trip – please return reply slips by Monday 25th January

Friday 5th February  China Day – children should dress in their Chinese clothing or red/gold clothing. They will take part in a range of activities to commemorate the new year and watch the special CNY assembly (for students only). Please note this will also incorporate a lion dance.

What a great week to be in Year 1! We started of the week with a visit to the History Museum on Monday. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend and help. The children came back with many questions about the exhibits they saw.

On Friday, we went to the Kids Fest production of Room On The Broom, a children’s story by Julia Donaldson. It was fantastic!

Remember, we ask that all children have a parent come if possible to the Dim Sum trip in February. This is a great way to learn a little more about local Hong Kong culture and celebrate CNY in the local fashion – by eating! The restaurant is quite good, and the teachers look forward to the food and conversations with parents. Remember to cancel Deli Fresh for this day!

Where we are in Place and Time

Central Idea: Exploring artefacts helps our understanding of people’s history

The History Museum is a great collection of artefacts, or objects, that represent part of Hong Kong’s past. Touring the museum is like a time machine starting with the first rock formations of the islands of Hong Kong, and continuing to the first animals leading to the first people. Exhibits show how the lives of people have changed in Hong Kong.

To build on to this, we are asking two things! If any parents, or especially grandparents, would like to come in and talk about how their lives or how Hong Kong has changed over the years it would really help history come alive. We are focusing on artefacts, so we have also asked that if children want they can bring in an item that shows a part of their history, or how they have changed. Shells from a special trip to the beach, baby clothes that don’t fit anymore, even a piece of the Berlin Wall! – all of these have come in. Keep up the good work!

Central Idea: The base 10 place value system is used to represent numbers and number relationships

We will also be learning a bit more about Hong Kong money during this unit. Coins are a great way to explore the base 10 system and build familiarity with counting by 10s. Does your child have a small allowance? This really motivates children to learn some practical skills so they can get the most out of their money. You may have the next Warren Buffett in a few years!

The museum and theatre trip provided great opportunities to encourage children to write about an event that happened. We are practising the use of details and descriptive language to make writing more interesting, rather than repetitive sentence starters like, “I went… I went… I went…” Focusing on one small moment of time, we ask students to stretch out all the details they can think of. What were people saying? What did you see? How were you feeling? What smells were in the air? Listen to this example from Gabriel Chan in 1G. We’ve edited for grammar and spelling, but listen to the great descriptions!
We played cops and robbers and Mr Teahan chose me to be the cop. I said, “Ok, I’m the cop.” I hope I catch a lot of robbers. When I was chasing one of them, “I caught you!” and I caught three of them. And the robbers kept escaping and it was hard to catch them. There was no guard, so I ran the fastest I can. They hide so that I can’t see them. And I ran, and ran, and ran. I found the hardest place I can, but I still can’t find them. Then, I kept looking and finally I found them, and I chased them, and I caught three of them.
You can really feel Gabriel’s frustration! Even if your child is not writing yet, having these conversations and writing down your child’s words is a great way to build these skills and familiarity with storytelling. Drawings work wonderfully, too!
Next week we will be introducing a new set of phonemes:
ll   ff   ss  zz
Camera Words :
you  play  this  come  my  have

Please contact your child’s teacher if you or a grandparent would like to come in to share some history. Cantonese speakers are great, as we can have a translator!
