Monday 11th April – BHS Classes Resume for Term 3
Friday 15th April – 1F Class Assembly

This week has been a busy and productive one for all of the Year 1 children. We have been continuing to look at how plants are useful to us and also looking at how all living things are connected to each other. The children have enjoyed planting some seeds with Miss Chung and over the next few weeks we will observe their growth and learn how to care for our plants.

Ms Jeves has been continuing to work with us for Information Literacy lessons and she has been focussing on sorting and classifying information. Over the past few weeks Ms Jeves has been using a thinking tool called “The Six Thinking Hats”. This tool encourages the children to think about issues from different perspectives. So far the children have used the Red, White and Yellow Thinking Hats and they should be able to tell you about each one. Please take some time this week to talk to your child and ask them to explain what each hat stands for.

As part of our unit, next Friday the children will be going to LIONS Nature Education Centre. Please make sure that you have returned the reply slip to your child’s class teacher by Monday. If you have expressed an interest to come with us, your child’s class teacher will be in touch with you early next week. Next Friday will be a dress casual day for BHS but we would like the Year 1 children to wear their PE uniform so that we are able to identify them easily when we are out on our trip.

Sharing the Planet

Central Idea: Plants sustain life on Earth

This week we have been continuing to encourage the children to think about where their food comes from and have been trying to discuss some of their misconceptions. Part of this has involved us watching video clips about how different fruits, vegetables and grains are grown, harvested and packaged ready for the supermarket. Please continue to talk to your child about what they are eating at mealtimes and where their food comes from.

Next week we will be exploring other ways in which plants are useful to us such as, their use in medicines, building materials and their environmental uses. We will also continue to explore the interdependence of all living things and Miss Chung will be working with each class to do some observational art in the Butterfly Garden.

Central Idea: Addition and subtraction are connected to each other and used to solve problems

This week in Year 1 we have been looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction and the children have been inquiring into this by using Maths equipment to model addition and subtraction and have been creating number stories to show their understanding of addition and subtraction. We have been teaching the children different strategies for addition and subtraction such as, using their knowledge of known number facts, counting on and back and using a number line.

Next week we will continue with this focus by setting up some practical problem solving tasks in the classroom where the children will have to apply their knowledge to a real life situation.

This week the children have been looking at non-fiction texts about plants and living things and have been exploring some of the features of non-fiction books such as, diagrams, labels and captions. Next week we will continue with this and the children will create their own diagrams complete with labels and captions. Each class will also start collecting plant related words for a class dictionary.
We will be continuing our Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves.

We will continue on with these phonemes and camera words:

ch, sh, th, wh
what  going  give  like  do  says

Mandarin – Alessandro Di Giulio & Jasmine Tin

SLT Awards – Shunji Lam

Next week is BHS Green Week and throughout the week the children will have the opportunity to engage in activities linked to the environment and protecting our planet.

WWF – BHS students are trying to raise money for the WWF. This organisation does so much work in helping to protect endangered species around the world. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in the school foyer, the children can buy a badge for $10 and help raise money for the WWF.

Earth Hour – On Saturday 19th March at 8:30pm it is Earth Hour. The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. Please join in with Earth Hour next Saturday.
