Year 2 Update Wk 21

Happy Chinese New Year

Tuesday 2^nd February

Year 2 Bake sale – please provide 6-8 home-made cakes or cookies (NO nuts) in a disposable OR named container. Thank you.

Wednesday 3^rd February

Year 2 Dim Sum Lunch and CNY Flower Market visit with parents.

Friday 5^th February

China Day – children should dress in their Chinese clothing or red/gold clothing. They will take part in a range of activities to commemorate the new year and watch the special CNY assembly. Please note this will also incorporate a lion dance.

Chinese New Year school break

School will close for Chinese New Year at 3.00pm on 5th February and classes will resume at 8.45am on 15th February.

Friday 19^th February

Sports Day (more details to follow).

Year 2 Dim Sum Lunch and CNY Flower Market

We are still waiting for some children’s permission slips for Dim Sum lunch on the 3rd February. Could you please return the permission slip with number of people attending if you have not done so already.

Portfolios

We are still missing some portfolios. Please remember to return your child’s portfolio to their class teacher a.s.a.p.

Library Book Bag

Please make sure your child has their book bag and library books on the correct day.

Daily Collection

Children are taken by their class teacher to the front stairs at 2:55pm daily, to allow them to leave the building in a safe manner by 3:00pm.

After the excitement of sharing day and the school being closed on Monday due to the weather, the children have come to school fresh and ready to learn. This week we have been learning about new concepts in maths, reflecting on our Sharing Day and completing a recount of our experience on Friday.

We have started to learn about growth mindset and completed a task that allowed us to reflect upon things we couldn’t do 5 years ago and last year. We then listed things that we are learning to do this year and watched a video about positive thoughts. We shall continue to develop this.

As Beacon Hill school are taking part in a kindness challenge, we decided to write affirmations about our peers. We chose someone in the class and we said something we liked about them.

During Mandarin time we have been creating out own Great Wall and learning about the year of the monkey.

Celebrations and traditions can be expressions of shared beliefs and values

This week we have completed our third UOI. In class we carried out our reflections on the sharing day and we listed 3 things that we had learned. We were also able to identify the different ways we shared our information to our parents.

We have carried out our summative assessments and we chose 3 celebrations from around the world to identify the traditions associated with each.

Our next Unit of Inquiry will be ‘People use and change material to suit their needs’.

The operation of addition and subtraction are related to each other and are used to process information for problem solving

Shapes are classified and named according to their properties.

The children have been consolidating their learning by using addition and subtraction on a daily basis during mental and practical maths tasks. As we shall be moving onto Shape, the children completed a pre- assessment to test their knowledge of 2D and 3D shape. We then looked at the properties of 2D shapes and also completed some interactive maths by playing Mathletics. Next week we shall continue to look at the properties of shape and carry out some practical investigations.

This week we completed a reflection and recount of our sharing day. Next week we shall begin to look at non fiction texts in class. We will be learning to identify the layout of the text and identify the key facts. We will continue to have a focus on grammar and be paying particular attention to sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and tenses.

During our phonics lessons, we will continue and complete unit 5 with the focus on the phoneme ‘ay.’

Our Next unit will begin after the Chinese New Year.

Due to the school closure on Monday 25th of January 2016, there was no Golden Book assembly.

Spelling

Spelling homework is given out on a Friday. Due to China Day in school, the next spelling test will take place on Thursday 4th Feb 2016.

Reading

Children continue to bring home one book per night to read with an adult. If they do not complete the book in one night, they are able to bring this home to read the following night. Please ensure that you are leaving a comment about your child’s reading in their reading journal. Teacher’s are in the process of assessing children and therefore the colour of their reading may change.

Learning Centre Parent /Family Borrowing

As you will have seen in the school newsletter it is now possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library. By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong.

The library is open for family borrowing at these times:

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we have ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack. We will let you know in advance if and when PTA will be selling fruit so that your child can bring in money then.
