How the World Works

Central Idea: Changes of the earth and its atmosphere can impact the natural world

Lines of Inquiry

  1. How the different components of the earth are interrelated
  2. Why the earth has changed and continuing to change
  3. How we know the earth has changed

We will be wrapping the unit up with final assessments.

Fractions and Decimals

Central Idea – Fractions and decimals are ways of representing whole part relationships

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Constructing and representing equal parts of a whole
  • Identifying, ordering and describing fractions using mathematical language
  • Understanding the relationship between fractions and decimals

The children will be learning to:

Read, write, compare, and order decimals

  • Understand and use decimal numbers to tenths
  • Sequence and order tenths
  • Order mixed numbers with decimals

     Use the language of decimals

Model and compare decimals with fractions

  • E.g. Name three quarters as a decimal and a fraction

Measurement – Temperature

The children will be learning to:

  • Estimate and measure temperature in Celsius.
  • Begin to develop temperature landmarks. (boiling point, freezing point)

These outcomes will be linked with a variety of science experiments in the Unit of Inquiry.

  • Reading degrees Celsius on a thermometer (measure using scales)
  • Comparing Fahrenheit and Celsius
  • Independent mini-inquiries

 Explanation

To explain the processes involved in natural and social phenomena, or to explain how something works.

  • The structure of an explanation text is often:

                    –           a general statement to introduce or identify the topic

                    –           a series of sequenced steps/paragraphs explaining how or why something occurs, steps continue until the final state is produced or the explanation is complete

                    –           a concluding statement

                    –           text may include labelled diagrams, flow charts etc

  • Group related information using conventions of paragraphing
  • Questioning – forming questions to guide information finding

Final assessment this week.

No Golden Book this week.

Homework books are collected and marked each Friday, there are the same children not bringing in their homework each week. Please ensure homework is returned each Friday as late homework will not be marked.
