Parent Volunteers Needed
Our Year 5 students are currently working on their big business unit where they are creating their own businesses and running a market day to raise money.  As part of the unit the children have been asked to give a presentation to a panel of business experts.  We are looking for volunteer business experts who can offer advice to the children and give positive feedback to groups pf children.  The presentations are held over two days, on Thursday 9th March and Friday 10th March.
If you are able to be an expert on either day, or even for part of one of the days, please email Mr. Pheasant.  His email address is:

We have had another busy week in Year 5! Children enjoyed an exciting trip to Sham Shui Po and we would like to say a big thank you to all parents who very kindly gave up their time to join us. The trip was a great success and that was down to the direction and encouragement the group leaders gave to the children.  Children have been continuing to work on their cooperative skills this week.  Not only have they had to make a number of compromises within their Big Business unit they have also had to work closely during P.E to create and communicate new games.

Central Idea:

There are many factors at work in a market place

Classes started the week by analysing the findings from their surveys. Groups then used this information to help create their shopping lists for Sham Shui Po. This involved the children doing a number of calculations – not only for an idea of costings – but also to ensure they left enough money for the products they knew they wouldn’t be able to get at Sham Shui Po. Children also finalised their business roles and applied for the specific jobs they wanted. As a group they then matched the best candidate to the roles. Groups have been working hard to come up with catchy names, slogans and logos to support their business ideas.  During the trip to Sham Shui Po, children had time to browse, gather ideas and prices before deciding what they wanted to buy.  A number of groups managed to do some serious negotiating to get the best price. Back at school, children had a number of tasks they needed to do following their trip. Children created and updated their own spreadsheets to ensure their budgets were in order. They discussed goods they still needed to buy, researched the best place to source them and decided who would go and buy. Next week, the business groups will continue to work on their business plans and preparation for their business presentations.

We have been looking at a range of persuasive adverts and have focused on the the techniques used to hook viewers in as well as considering who the target audience is. Children have had the chance to identify these in existing adverts as well as applying them to their own adverts. The children have considered the use and purpose of slogans and logos and their place within a business. Consideration has also been given to the colours used and the emotions connected with these.

5M: Vien Chan for successfully applying advertising techniques to an advert.

Gather examples of adverts and identify some of the persuasive techniques you observed being used.  Whilst in the supermarket, look at some of the promotions on offer.  Take pictures of these promotions and make predictions about which one you think will carry the biggest saving.  Were you right?  What impact did the choice of language have on your prediction.  Create a google doc showing these examples and share them with your teacher.  You may need to bring in the examples of the adverts you found, but don’t forget to identify the techniques used.

Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches

At Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts.  When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter.  We thank you for your cooperation.

Please return any sold raffle tickets and remember more can always be requested.
