Happy New Year!

What a great week to start 2016. We’ve had 2 special guests, more science and lots of fun!

Visitors
This week Year 6 have had the wonderful opportunity to work with two visiting experts.
IMG_7793On Tuesday and Friday, groups of students worked with Mr Paul Melsom, getting some hands on experience in the BHS garden. They sowed seeds and helped build a bamboo propagator, which will be used by the school to nurture and grow a range of plants. In the process, they learnt about the life cycle of plants, how to support this and how to create stable and ecologically sound structures.

On Wednesday, Y6 students joined Y3 and Y4 in a fun Jump Jam master class, led by the creator of Jump Jam, Mr Jump Jam, Brett Fairweather, himself. Jump Jam is a “fusion of dance and fitness” and a fun way to exercise. Y6 took an active role in asking Mr Jump Jam questions at the end of the session and thanking him on behalf of the school. As you can see, the students had a great time practising their dance moves too!

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 3

Transdisciplinary Theme : How the World Works

Central Idea : Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • what scientific inquiry is
  • how the scientific process is used
  • the application of the scientific process

Concepts : form, function,

Learner Profile : reflective, inquirer

Attitudes : independence, curiosity

We have continued inquiring into the scientific process by conducting different science experiments within the classes. This was also supported in Information Technology lessons, with Mr Lowe sharing a tool for the students to use when conducting a chromatography experiment and this was completed by all classes before the Christmas break.

Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

Number Maths classes were back with Miss Fisher and Mrs Davis’ groups working with fractions in a number of different ways, and Mr Hoskins’ and Miss Fearn’s classes have been working on percentages.

Strand Maths – Shape and Space

Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

Our inquiry into shape and space has continued by looking at ways to describe and classify 2D and 3D shapes through a range of different learning experiences.

Our explanation writing has continued with students gaining additional note-taking practice to gather information. They then used these notes to plan and write a further explanation.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : Using the A3 “Real World Connections” sheet you have been given, think back to the experiments we have looked at in class and explain how they help us to better understand the world. Deadline: Friday 15th January.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – ‘Hidden Numbers’ and problem solving
  • Miss Fisher – Renaming and ordering fractions by finding the LCD.
  • Mr Hoskins – Percentages word problems
  • Mrs Davis – Equivalent fractions and Mathletics. Mrs Davis has set you some new Mathletics tasks to do, so make sure you’re up to date with them!

Thought of the Week : The most important thing is a person. A person who incites your curiosity and feeds your curiosity; and machines cannot do that in the same way that people can. – Steve Jobs
