Back in the swing of things

It’s hard to believe that we have completed 2 weeks of term 2 already. We have had another fun week in Year 6.
On Monday morning the whole of year 6 took part in an exhilarating, exciting and nail biting tournament – gecko mathematics.
Every child in year 6 was placed into a team and the number crunching began. The questions covered all aspects of mathematics. From finding common factors of numbers to working out real-life shape and space problems. The children loved it and enjoyed competing against one another. Here are some pictures, check to see the steam coming from the children’s ears.

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 3

Transdisciplinary Theme : How the World Works

Central Idea : Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • what scientific inquiry is
  • how the scientific process is used
  • the application of the scientific process

Concepts : form, function,

Learner Profile : reflective, inquirer

Attitudes : independence, curiosity

This week year 6 have continued learning about the scientific process. As well as learning about the process, our children have began researching the latest scientific inventions and discoveries. Mini inquiries have also started, finding out about influential scientists from the past, these mini inquiries link back to our previous theme, making connections to the past and the impact it has had on the present day.

Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

Children in year 6 are enjoying converting fractions, decimals and percentages in a number of ways. It is so interesting to see how many children have developed their own method for solving problems.

Strand Maths – Shape and Space

Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

Our inquiry into shape and space has continued by looking at ways to describe and classify 2D and 3D shapes through a range of different learning experiences.

Our explanation writing has continued with students gaining additional note-taking practice to gather information. The pupils in year 6 have been proof reading; making corrections and alterations to improve their work. Some children have even began to use the skills that will be needed for the exhibition by backing/mounting their work and helping to create class displays.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : continue research on your ‘What’s New in Science’ inquiry and start to prepare your presentation.  Also all children need to start to learn their songs for our upcoming PYPX Exhibition.  Words will be given out today so you need to know them!

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – Book Boxes (division and remainders as fractions) and Jolly Jetson’s Joy (problem solving using the Draw a Diagram Strategy). Please make sure all sections are completed and are brought in to school by next Tuesday.
  • Miss Fisher – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages conversions
  • Mr Hoskins – Percentages completed on Mathletics
  • Mrs Davis – Adding Fractions. Check Mathletics.
