This workshop will describe the different stages of adolescence,  clarify the reasons why messages are not clear and will give you ‘tools’ to make communication between you and your pre-teen more positive.

A scan of a photograph is fine but a photo of a photo will just not work – you can always send us in the original and we can scan it here and send it back to you.  Please send it in to Miss Kannis, her email address is:  kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk.

NGO Conference – On Friday we all headed over to KJS to take part in the ESF wide Year 6 NGO Conference. The children were separated into small, class-based groups and then joined other Y6 students from across ESF to listen to and learn from a wide variety of NGOs. These included, but were not limited to, Unicef, Christian Action, World Vision, Hong Kong Shark Foundation and many more. Each child had the opportunity to hear from four NGOs and to learn about the work they do. Many of the presenters also gave the children ideas about different kinds of action they could take too. It was a really inspiring day and the BHS teachers were very proud of how well the children listened and behaved.

Exhibition Information Morning – Thank you so much to all the mums, dads and helpers who came along to support the children and learn more about the Y6 Exhibition at the Exhibition Information Morning on Tuesday. There was a great turn out and we know from speaking to the students afterwards that your pledges about how to support them during this time really meant a lot. Some such pledges included giving your child priority to use the home computer, letting them visit friends in their group if necessary and promising to listen and help if needed. Great ideas; thank you, again!

Dialogue in the Dark 6L & 6F – This week 6F and 6L were given the amazing opportunity of visiting the Dialogue in the Dark experience in Mei Foo. I don’t want to give too much away here as 6H are not going until next week, but suffice to say, the children really got to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, think about major life changes and think about the issue of disability awareness.

Meanwhile, others were taking part in trials for the ESF Road Race. Those selected to represent the school have been notified and will be bringing home a letter today.

Our new Unit of Inquiry in English is autobiographies. In this unit the children will get to focus on their first person writing skills and ultimately produce their very own autobiographies. This week we had a look at the different ways to begin an autobiography, such as with an anecdote from childhood or the story of how someone was born. Don’t be surprised if the children come home asking you about the day they were born!

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays.  Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : THIS WEEK – Using your info that your collected last week during you interview you need to put it all on a timeline on Lucid Chart.  You can access Lucid Chart via The Beacon and make sure you save your work so you can access it here at school when needed. This needs to be completed by 11th March, 2016.

DON’T FORGET!!! Can all the children continue to learn the words to Brave and Hall of Fame? If any children are playing instruments please keep up the rehearsing at home.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • All Classes -please take home and finish the sheet you were working on during the Student Led Conference if you did not have time to complete it. Also, please catch up with your Mathletics tasks.

Thought of the Week : Don’t put in  ½ the effort in unless you’re ok with ½ the results. #growthmindset
