PE Monthly Update #3

The Year Ones have started a new unit on movement composition with the focus on gymnastics. They have explored how we can travel and been introduced to gymnastics shapes. In this unit, they will work on balance, rolls and jumps and will put together a simple circuit.

In their PMP sessions they have been introduced to forward rolls and this week they were able to climb a real ladder (with adult supervision). One of the stations is throwing and catching and it is important that they practise these skills at home.

Gymnastics

The Year Twos have started their gymnastics unit and they looked at what looks good in gymnastics and what doesn’t. They were taught the word ‘aesthetic’ and made sure that their travelling is aesthetic. They will continue to hear this word as they begin to create travelling sequences combining the gymnastics skills in PMP and from Year 1.
PMP
The Year twos have a station each week dedicated to throwing and catching. This is an important and fundamental PE skill and it is important that they get the opportunity to practise throwing and catching at home. Please take the time to take them to a playground to practise! Many thanks.

The Year Threes have started a gymnastics unit. They have put together sequences on the floor and using mats. They have created their own forwards and backwards sequences and made a combination of these. They will continue to look at creating sequences on various gymnastic apparatus.

With their class teachers they have been looking at the link between forces and PE. When they visit the pitch they will be playing different variations of rounders and explore the link between striking and fielding and forces.

The Year Fours have started their new games unit where the focus is on basketball. They have explored ball control, dribbling and shielding the ball. They liked being told they were allowed to ‘steal’ in basketball and tried out this new skill. Throughout the rest of the unit they will be looking at passing, defending, shooting and playing small sided modified basketball games.

With their class teachers when they visit the pitch they will be introduced to tag rugby. This will involve the teaching of team work and attacking and defending.

The Year 5s have just started a new unit on gymnastics. They have looked at making their transitions interesting and smooth when travelling. They have explored creating sequences at different levels. They will continue to work on sequences throughout the unit and will create group sequences.

With their class teachers they have been looking at games and what is included in games. They will play a variety of games and will eventually create their own game and teach their game to Year Ones.

The Year 6s have just started a new unit on gymnastics. They have looked at making their transitions interesting and smooth when travelling. They have explored creating sequences at different levels. They will continue to work on sequences throughout the unit and will create group sequences.

With their class teachers they are learning a net/wall game with a focus on badminton. They will learn forehand, backhand and how to outwit an opponent in badminton/net and wall games.
