What a busy week we’ve had! In UOI, Mr Thompson gathered all the year group together and introduced the 5 Ways of Wellbeing. The children then selected an area that they would like to focus on. The areas are as follows:

Drama, dance, body language (Ms Wu)

Images, art (Mrs Mulligan)

Codes, semiphores (Mr Glencross)

Next week the children will work in their groups to become experts in that form of communication.

Mr Lowe also came into our classes to support the children setting up their chromebooks and discussed ways to use it and move around the school with it sensibly.

Effective communication can be enhanced through different methods.

We will be inquiring into:

  1. How signs and symbols facilitate effective communication (form)

  2. How the arts can be used to communicate (function)

  3. The reasons and impact for communicating in different ways (causation)

Next week, the children will be working in their focus groups inquiring into the reasons and impact for communicating in different ways. This will be linked to one of the five ways to wellbeing.

This week we continued with our place value unit. The children have been demonstrating different ways ways to show their understanding of number through written form, standard form, expanded form and through pictures. The children have also been ordering, comparing and renaming numbers. Ask your child to tell you some of the key vocabulary used when comparing numbers.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary.

Next week the children will start inquiring into our Shape and Space unit.

The children now have a well established routine for borrowing readers. A reminder that on a Monday and Friday, the children will read from Big Universe and borrow home readers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
This week the children have continued to look at features of a recount and have focussed on past tense, time connectives and WOW words. We were impressed with their Airport trip recounts!
Next week the children will begin to look at features of poetry.

Spellings will begin next week. Children will be required to learn five spellings words from their individual spelling list (highlighted words in their journals). There will be three buddy spelling tests each week and monitored closely by the teacher. If your child gets two dots, that word will be added to their spelling list for the following week. Please encourage your child to practise their words at home everyday using the Say, Cover, Write and Check strategy and use them in their writing, remembering to include a capital letters and full stops in their sentences. There are optional spelling units in the middle of the book to reinforce spelling patterns and phonics. Children are encouraged to inquire into these in their own spare time at home. Word searches near the end of the book are for class-use only to consolidate our phonics programme.

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
