Meet the Teacher Evening
Thank you so much for coming to meet with us on Wednesday evening to find out about what Year 4 has in store for your children. It was lovely to meet so many of you and we look forward to working with you all over the coming year. If you were unable to attend, the presentation should be available on the school website very soon.

In order to find out more about other people’s beliefs, the Year 4 classes spent time with one another’s teachers this week to learn more about them and their beliefs. Each teacher provided clues about some of their beliefs and then explained why those beliefs were important to them and where their beliefs came from. The children had chance to experience something that was really important to each teacher… Exercise with Ms Andrews, Modern calligraphy with Mrs Fennelly and Pop Art with Mr Whyman.

English

Following these sessions, we continued to develop our understanding of Kennings poems by putting what we had learnt about each teacher into a Kenning poem. We then had to carefully edit our writing to ensure we really had chosen the “best possible words” and then we published them. The children will look forward to sharing them with you on our Year 4 Sharing Day.

Maths

As part of our work on place value, the children have been thinking about the different ways 4, 5 and 6 digit numbers can be represented. We have also been comparing numbers using greater than and less than and ordering numbers.

All 3 classes had the opportunity to visit the Cloud this week and spend time with Mr Lowe in order to familiarise themselves with the features of their new Chromebooks. They even have touch screens that are designed specifically to work with HB pencils! Everyone also had a go at posting on Flipgrid by recording a short video on the in-built cameras.

Central Idea

Experiences and beliefs shape a person’s actions

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into…

  • How our actions affect our lives (Causation)
  • People’s many and varied beliefs  (Perspective)
  • The interconnectedness of beliefs and actions  (Connection)

Next week, students will be making connections between people’s beliefs and the actions that they take. We will be doing this through multimedia work with Ms Kannis, dance lessons with class teachers and Ms Claudia, as well as in the classrooms.

In order to help us think about this we will be analysing the actions of superheroes and thinking about how this connects with their experiences and beliefs.

Base 10 place value system can be extended to represent size

An inquiry into:

  1. The patterns of 5 digit numbers and how they are represented
  2. Representing number patterns using words, symbols, numbers and tables

Next week the children will be continuing to rename, order and compare 5 digit numbers and beyond. We will also be consolidating our understanding of rounding and be creating posters to explain to younger students how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Writing focus: Writing to entertain
Poetry
We will be continuing to explore poetry by thinking about the poetic devices in some pems we really enjoy (metaphor, alliteration, similes, repitition, rhyme, onomatopeia). We will also be utilising the features of cinquain poems to create our own.
