Beacon Hill School Uniforms – we’ve had some slightly cooler weather this week and the children are starting to want to wear their winter uniforms. Can you please remember to get them into their full school uniforms each day or full PE kit. Girls can wear purple tights but no black leggings please and when they do please pop a pair of school socks in their school bags so they can take them off when it warms up throughout the day.
Also, can you please refrain from getting the children to wear long sleeve white (or any colour) tops under the uniform shirt…….if they are cold they should be putting on the BHS school jumper, jacket or pullover. Our rooms are very warm with sometimes over 32 people in them and we are starting to have to get the kids to de-layer as soon as they come in…..this can lead to a lot of lost clothing items! The teacher will remind the children to rug-up warm for break times if need be.
Secret Friend Presents – The children will have received their secret friend recipient this week so you can take your child shopping to grab the present anytime soon. Please bring them into school when wrapped and ready but on or before 7th December.

Help For Our Next Unit – As we move forward onto our next unit of inquiry, we would like to ask any parents to share their own migration stories with us. If you have an experience you would be willing to share, we would like to ask you to write a short recount of the experiences, challenges, and risks you faced when moving countries. Any accounts would be gratefully received.
Learning Centre – On days where the children visit the Learning Centre with their class, they will need to bring their book bags if they wish to borrow books. These days are as follows. The children also have access to our Learning Centre before school – so if they happen to forget their LC book on their specific day they can always pop up there and exchange it in the mornings after they unpack their school bag.

English (Writing) – we began to look at some good examples of some short stories to get our creative juices flowing and get ourselves ready to do our own short story writing. We read Wolves by Emily Gravett and discussed what makes it such a good story. We then had a go at attempting our own short story!
Unit of Inquiry – this week we began by tuning in to our new UOI with unscrambling our Central Idea…..Migration has an impact on people and society.
Visiting Author – Ritu Hemnani.….Ritu Hemnani came back to read her migration picture book to us and discuss migration with us. She introduced us to these four types of migration…..economic migration, social migration, political migration, and environmental migration. She also talked to us about forced and chosen migrations. Please ask your child and see what he or she remembers! Her book Gope and Meera describes the story of these two protagonists during the Partition of India. The children may well decide to investigate this further when asked to do their own personal inquiry.
Book Creator – During this UOI the children will be journalling their learning and making their own electronic book in Book Creator. They can (and are encouraged!) to continue working on this electronic book at home as it’s always accessible via the internet. Well done to those children who have already worked on theirs at home, good job!
Child Migrant Stories – this week we also heard first-hand stories of children not dissimilar to us who have migrated as a child. A really interesting website chilmigrantstories.com helped us to hear what it was like for these children when they moved to London as a child. Some of our skills we are trying to develop for this unit include…...to have empathy for others, to consider ideas from multiple perspectives and to listen carefully to other perspectives an to have empathy for others. And our discussions around these stories are hopefully helping us to develop these skills.

Writing Focus – Narrative
Narratives are a popular genre for students as it provides the writer with an opportunity to share their imagination, creativity, skill and understanding of nearly all elements of writing. On occasion, we refer to a narrative as ‘creative writing’ or story writing.
The purpose of a narrative is simple, to tell the audience a story. It can be written to motivate, educate or most commonly entertain. Narratives can be both fact or fiction.
The challenge in writing a good narrative is to captivate the audience and keep them engaged as the story is told.
Reading Focus – Connecting and Inferring
Connecting – We want our learners to be actively engaged while they are reading. This means they are interacting with what they read, not just saying words on a page. One effective way we can do this is making connections to the text. There are three kinds of connections readers make before, during, or after reading:
1. text to self, which could sound like:

I can relate to this character because…
If it was me, I would…
2. text to text, which could sound like:
This reminds me of another book I’ve read/movie I’ve watched…
This is different from the other book because…

Inferring – Observations occur when we can see something happening. In contrast, inferences are what we figure out based on an experience. Helping students understand when information is implied, or not directly stated, will improve their skill in drawing conclusions and making inferences. These skills will be needed for all sorts of school assignments, including reading, science and social studies. Inferential thinking is a complex skill that will develop over time and with experience.

- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks or feel free to try any others that you feel you want to practice.
- Prodigy – please continue on with your Prodigy online games.
- 5F – please continue to use Quizlet to help you learn your spelling words and meanings.
- Spelling – The children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. The will happen on a Monday for 5F, Wednesday for 5D and Friday for 5C. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night? Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading
- Mandarin Home Learning – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
- Ms Lynn – Please complete home learning assigned in Mandarin Matrix.
