Who We Are

Central Idea: People have abilities and interests who form who they are.

Next week we will talk about what makes a good friend and each class will make a class book to share with others.  Students will also be completing tasks with friends such as puzzles, construction and reading a book.

We will also be discussing what we thinks makes a good learner and reflecting upon how we learn best.

Next week Ms Jeves will finish off her time with the year one children for this term.  She will work with the students helping them to ask questions about something that they do not know.

Measures

Next week we will continue our maths focus of measurement.  Students will measure, compare and sort lengths using non- standard units such as cubes, teddies and learning links.

We will be using the language of measurement which includes words like long, short, tall, short and higher.

Concepts about print  Our focus for next week when we read with the students will be concepts of print.  This includes reminders of:

  • Reading from left to right.
  • Reading from top to bottom.
  • The fact that letters and words convey a message.
  • Print is what we read.
  • The “return sweep”, to move from one line to the next.
  • Illustrations in a book correspond to the print.
  • Every book as a front, back, and an author.

At home when you are reading with your children please have discussions about not only the words on the page but also the parts of the book.

Reading assessments Over the next couple of weeks we will assessing the children to make sure that they are bringing home a book from the correct colour.  Please be patient as these assessments can take approximately ten to fifteen minutes for each child.  Please remember that the book that your child takes home is a ‘practise’ book and they may already be able to read it.

Parks and playgrounds
The weather in Hong Kong is starting to cool down, this is a great opportunity for you and you family to visit some of the fantastic parks and playgrounds in Hong Kong.  Playgrounds offer children fresh air, exercise and a chance to be social with their friends and family.  Playgrounds also offer children a chance to be creative and use their imagination as they create games and role plays.  Many playgrounds now offer opportunities for problem solving as children manipulate equipment and climb small climbing walls.
Here is a link to some of HK’s best outdoor playground as suggested by little steps Asia:
