Empire of the Sun (PG)

1987, Directed by Steven Spielberg

e

Over the next two weeks we will be watching ‘Empire of the Sun’ as part of our introduction to Historical Fiction.

Story Overview – An aristocratic British youth is separated from his family at the start of World War II after the Japanese Army invades British controlled areas of China. Reduced to living on the street and fighting for food, the youth is eventually interned in a Japanese POW camp for British civilians. Here, admiration quickly develops both for captured American pilots and the Japanese themselves. When the war ends, the boy, torn from everything he knew, attempts to again find his parents.

Please let your class teacher know if there are any issues with your son or daughter watching this movie.

Year 6 Movie and Party Day – Thursday 8th December….wear your party clothes and bring Secret Friend presents to share.  Party Bags to be given out – don’t worry if you’re not in, we’ll save you one!

House Colour Day – to show our house spirit we are wearing our house colours on Friday 9th December.

Gentle Reminder.……please don’t let the kids forget our wonderful EAs Mrs Chand and Mrs J when the children are picking out Christmas pressies and cards this year – they work so hard with us and all the children, it would be lovely for the children to show their appreciation.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • The traits of leadership
  • The responsibilities of leadership
  • The impact of decision-making

Concepts …

Form – We will understand that leaders have a range of different characteristics.

Responsibility – We will understand that with  leadership there comes responsibility

FunctionWe will understand the purpose and impact that leadership can have on us

Learner Profile : principled, courageous

Attitudes : commitment, integrity

Strand Maths – Shape and Space

Central Idea – Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

We are currently inquiring into the properties of 2D and 3D shapes (diagonals, angles etc) and properties of circles.  We’ve been doing lots of technical drawing in class and it really gives the ‘artists’ in the class a chance to show off their skills!

Number Maths

Central Idea – Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships

An inquiry into…

– decimal fractions and the number system
– how ratio is used to make comparisons
– sequences involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals

Some children are really ripping through these texts and are up to reading their third book!  And…some need a little more encouragement – could you please ask your child about their Historical Fiction text and how they are going with it?

We will be looking at the Historical Fiction Success Criteria next week and deconstructing good examples of HF.  We will also be focussing on poignant scenes from ‘Empire of the Sun’ and trying to write our own moments.  This is a particularly tricky writing genre but it gives the children a chance to shine and really showcase their writing skills.

We have our Year 6 Agents of Change NGO Conference at KJS coming up on 13th January, 2017 and the children will make some choices about which NGOs they would like to go and see on the day. It would be great if they found a local issue that they were passionate about and signed up to visit them on the day.  Hopefully, these visits and information gathering sessions will help the children decide on what they would like to focus on for our Exhibition.
Soooooooooooo.…for homework, can the children browse these NGOs on the web and hopefully it will give them some inspiration.  We have shared the children into the Google Slide with more info – but here’s the list!
