A message from 6H08……
Dear all Year 5 and 6 parents,

We are an exhibition group in 6H and have been researching health in Hong Kong. Our research has led us to finding out about stress, addiction, obesity and undernourishment.

According to the Feeding HK website, in Hong Kong alone up to 1.5 million people suffer from food insecurity, and 1 in 4 children don’t receive 3 meals a day. We need your help and support to take action against this problem.

Our group wants to make a food donation to Feeding HK. Feeding HK is an organisation that gives people access to food when they cannot provide it themselves.

The food that Feeding HK will take is listed below:

  • Rice (Individual / family-sized bags)
  • Noodles (Non-instant / non- fried)
  • Pasta (Spaghetti, macaroni etc.)
  • Cooking oil (Corn or Vegetable)
  • Canned Vegetables (Corn, mushrooms, peas etc – Low sodium & no added sugar)
  • Canned fish (Sardines, mackerel or Tuna – Either in Tomato sauce or Spring Water
  • Canned fruit (Pineapple, Peaches etc – Low sugar)
  • Biscuit & Crackers (Low sugar, Low sodium, Low fat)
  • Milk (UHT or powdered – low fat or non- fat)

Please also note that the food must not be expired.

Please leave the food in the Year 6 crush area addressed to 6H08.

The deadline was on Friday 29th of April  2016…..but I am sure that you could send in your last donations on Wednesday 4th May, 2016.

A massive thank you to all who have donated already.

GLUE! GLUE! GLUE! – To prevent us running out of glue and landing in a sticky situation, please remember to keep glue supplies topped up. We appreciate your help on the matter.
Labelling belongings A gentle reminder to stop any disputes of ownership of stationery, please label all of your children’s belongings clearly. The children bring a lot of stationery to school and sometimes things get misplaced or accidentally claimed. Thanks for your support with this.
Family borrowing – A reminder that it is still possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library.  By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong.  The library is open for family borrowing at these times…The library also has a number of newspapers and magazines which might be helpful for Exhibition, so if possible, looking through these with your child could be of great benefit to Exhibition journey!

Action Week….
We’ve had an amazing Action Week this year!  The children have been so busy getting themselves organised and taking themselves out to the school and community to perform their planned action.  Some of the action includes….
  • school-wide quizzes, games, puppet shows and information booths to raise awareness of their issues
  • a domestic helper appreciation afternoon tea
  • meetings with the administration and BHS leadership to encourage the purchasing of ethically conscious products
  • lessons taught to other BHS students on a wide variety of issues such as…obesity, discrimination, infectious diseases, cyber bullying etc.
  • iPad games planned, designed and created then shared with willing participants during lunch times
  • car wash to raise funds for Free the Children
  • ‘Blindfold Lunch’ to raise awareness for the visually impaired

Most groups have done a fantastic job, were well-prepared and organised and really raised awareness of their issue with the school body.  Whilst other groups may need to reflect a little on how they could have made it better…..but it’s all a great learning experience!

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 5

Transdisciplinary Theme : How We Organise Ourselves

Central Idea : Individual and group action makes a difference to how societies uphold human rights.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • action that can be taken to uphold people’s rights
  • 2nd LoI written with the help of our special advisers and it will pertain to the issue chosen by the group
  • 3rd LoI written with the help of our special advisers and it will pertain to the issue chosen by the group

Concepts : the children will review all concepts

Learner Profile : the children will try and focus on all LPs

Attitudes : the children will try and focus on all the attitudes

Strand Maths – Data Handling

Central Idea : Data can be presented effectively for valid interpretation and communication.

With survey results coming in thick and fast the children are beginning to study their findings. Using the chrome books the students will be evaluating their data and presenting it in a way that is clear and relevant.  We will also be looking at how to draw conclusion form these findings and making general statements.

Year 6 have began to plan and create autobiographies. These autobiographies will be worked on throughout the coming Exhibition and during the Year 6 Production. As the exhibition is so cross curricular, English is continually being worked on throughout the research, reflections and presentations that the children are constantly working on.

Please continue to keep your spelling journals in school unless your class teacher tells you otherwise.

Book Fest 2016

This week we have also been getting ready for next week’s Book Fest!  The theme this year is poetry and as a class we will be creating a class poem to submit to the English Team and it will be included in a BHS Poetry Anthology which will be available for you to view digitally shortly.  We have also been creating our own bunting that has been used to decorate not only our classrooms but up in the Learning Centre as well.  You can pop in to see it anytime during our Family Borrowing hours….it looks fab!

UOI : continue work for your Exhibition.  Each class teacher will give more specific instructions about what you might need to do in order to get ready for action week. Use this weekend to tie up any loose ends, create posters, leaflets, slides, get ingredients ready……. anything that will benefit your group. Don’t forget to stay in contact with the other members, whether that is via the communication document or via email.

DON’T FORGET!!! Can all the children continue to learn the words to Brave and Hall of Fame? If any children are playing instruments please keep up the rehearsing at home. We had our first whole Year 6 rehearsal on Thursday and it is sounding good, but it needs to be sounding excellent by the time the exhibition evening is upon us.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – Additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • All Number Maths Groups : Mathletics and keep checking in on you survey results ready to make graphs, tables and write conclusions.
