Year 1 Update – Wk 32

Monday 2nd May – Public Holiday, no school
Tuesday 3rd May – BHS  Professional Development day, no school for children
Wednesday 4th – Friday 6th May – BHS Book Fest
Friday 6th May – Come to school dressed as a book character
Friday 13th May – Year 1 Sharing Morning
Tuesday 17th May – Year 1 Bake Sale
Next week, or the three remaining days of it, will be Book Fest! There will be a focus on poetry, but it is a time for loving books and stories in general. You better start thinking of your character costume now,as the dress up character parade is on Friday. This year we are focussing on HOMEMADE costumes rather than store bought ones. *Many parents have asked what time the disco will be over on Friday, but it is during lunch only so school will end at the regular time.
People have also asked what time Sharing Day will end on Friday the 13th. The activities should be done around 11:30 am after a short reflection. Children will have a quick play on the playground so that parents may exit the school more easily.

How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea: People Can Share Stories In Different Ways To Communicate

This week 1F and 1T made characters out of clay, while 1G will make characters next week. We have also spent some extra time focussing on fairy tales and traditional stories. Classes have also made giant story maps, painted spoon characters, and talked about using symbols to tell stories.

We have also spent some time focussing on the elements of a story, like characters, setting, conflict, and resolution. We looked into what stories we like and found that stories are more interesting when there is a problem to solve, and not when new characters are added in every scene.b

Central Idea: Fractions are a way of representing part of a whole

To start with fractions, we talked about what a half means. Numbers can have a half, shapes can have a half, as well as groups of objects. Children worked to distribute groups of objects into halves, and to find half of a given number. Learning doubles in addition is a valuable way to relate to halves!

Children also worked through story problems in which groups of cookies or other objects had to be distributed evenly between two or more people. Practise dividing your dinners up evenly! If there are 12 cookies for dessert, how many does each family member get? What about a plate of bok choy? What could you do to make sure everyone gets the same number of pieces? How would you start?

What makes for a good story? What do good authors do? We have noticed that in children’s writing, the character and conflict often get lost in a series of, “and then” statements. Or, new things keep happening without solving previous problems!  Sometimes this happens in a good story, but young writers would benefit from focusing on simple characters who encounter problems and work to solve those problems. This is a great game to practise at home! Work on oral stories together! Mom says, “There once was a mouse that was…” and the child has to finish the sentence and start another. “…hungry. So, he went looking for some food….” Mom says, “The mouse decided to ask his friend…” This type of story creating reinforces the idea of continuation and developing themes. Try it! If your story starts to have too many characters or unsolved problems, go back and few steps take the adventure in a different direction.

Phonics

We will continue with our Unit 6 phonemes. Please help us at home by playing the games on the Unit 6 Phonic Bookmark.

Yearbook Cover Competition! There’s an opportunity for even a Year 1 student to design the Yearbook cover. It should have 2015-16, BHS, The Beacon, and a design. Good luck!

Photo Competition!   In this your competition your child needs to take a photo of objects or an event which show the title of the book.  This photo should be emailed to Ms Jeves, with the child’s name, class and the title of the book as the subject header.  jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk  Closing date will be Friday 6th May, with the best entries being shown in assembly.
